Platelet Derived Growth Factor or PDGF is a protein that platelets, endothelial cells and macrophages produce. The platelets healthier granules store the protein. Used in Platelet Rich Plasma, this protein is released, when the platelets combine together and the coagulation cascade begins.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor or VEGF is the immune acid that is 24% similar to PDGF beta. The immune acid combines with the growth factors and triggers the healing process. This powerful mitogene from endothelial cells produces angiogenic actions that are used in Platelet Rich Plasma.

Transforming Growth Factor or TGF is a family of proteins including morphogenic bone proteins and many others. It performs three primary functions which are modulating cell proliferation, producing an immune suppressor effects and promoting the synthesis of extra-cellular matrix. It is another important element, used in Platelet Rich Plasma.

Fibroblast Growth Factor or FGF increases collagen synthesis, promotes endothelial cell proliferation and stimulates angiogenesis. Similar to FGF, Connective Tissue Growth Factor or CTGF is being utilized in research on Platelet Rich Plasma. It promotes cartilage regeneration, angiogenesis and platelet adhesion.

Use of PRP in Medical Surgeries

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP has become popular as a means of cartilage restoration over the past few years. In the field of medical surgery, it has developed into an orthobiologic option for ankle and foot injuries. PRP is also beneficial for such surgical treatments as bone augmentation, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. The use of PRP in cartilage restoration for treating the injuries to the knee and ankle joints is tremendously increasing. PRP offers enhanced concentration of autologous platelets that, in turn, leads to a high concentration of growth factors. Thus, PRP leads ensures the healing of tendons, ligaments and bones at a fast pace.
