Purging Crispinus therefore has a number of potential sources, antecedents, and literary justifications. Medically, a purge (laxative) is distinct from a vomit (emetic). Samuel Johnson defines the noun 'vomit', neatly enough, from works by Arbuthnot, who probably supplied the drug that poisoned Curll, and Sir Richard Blackmore, the poet-physician who was (in 1716 at least) a Curll author and who featured in Pope's pamphlets as such.36 But Jonson's Horace, like Tag Heuer Replica Watches most satirists, makes no distinction between the two forms of evacuation and Pope's triumphant verses, on the title page of the Full and True Account, enjoy a sense of powerful cleansing which is very close to the scene in Jonson's play:

At one level, such metaphor was a satiric commonplace. In his Discourse concerning the Original and Progress of Satire, Dryden writes: 'the end or scope of satire is to purge the passions'; Horace had begun with invective against 'private enemies' but 'had purged himself of this choler before he entered on those discourses which are more properly called the Roman satire'.37 Private revenge or lampoon is one thing, but when harnessed to an established discourse such as medicine it becomes itself purified and justified. Nonetheless it is not a straightforward matter to 'justify' Pope's purgation of Curll in this way. One of the major differences between Jonson's imagined Horatian revenge and Pope's imaginative retelling of his enacted assault on Curll is that Pope emphasises the low comedy rather than the high moral ground. Unable to give Curll the gentlemanly drubbing he deserved, Pope assaulted and degraded Curll's body on his own terms, reminding the world, brutally, that a spirit such as Curll's truly was mechanically operated. Apart from the verses, which act as a kind of cultural stamp, the title page of the first pamphlet deliberately imitates a standard-issue crime report, of the kind Curll might himself publish, and appears, superficially, to stand on Replica Breitling the side of the victim, several of whose regular distributors are listed in the mock imprint; Pope inhabits Curll's world, wreaking a textual revenge from inside the Curllean corpus.
