Rajasthan is popularly known for its huge Thar Desert spread across an area of about 200,000 sq. km. Rajasthan has seen hundreds of Kings in its History hence the majestic forts and palaces are a common thing which, you can find in almost all the cities of Rajasthan. Each and every fort or palace is unique in itself. No matter where are you traveling in Rajasthan, you can find a masterpiece of architectural work everywhere. Here is a list of some of the most famous Forts in Rajasthan:

Palace of Winds: In India the palace of wind is popularly known as Hawa Mahal. Palace stands for Mahal in Hindi and Wind stands for Hawa hence the name Hawa Mahal. This beautiful palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 AD. It is a five storied building. The specialty of this Palace is that it has total 953 small windows making it the most breeze palace.

Amber Fort: Located in the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur, Amber fort is one of the finest examples of architecture of Rajasthan. The construction of this magnificent fort is started by Man Singh I in 1592. But he could not see it completed in his life. It was finally completed by his descendant Jai Singh I. The walls and the ceiling of Amber fort are covered with beautiful array of mirrors, which reflect any streak of light, enabling it to illuminate the entire room.

Kumbhalgarh Fort: Located 64 km north of Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh fort is set amidst a cluster of thirteen mountain peaks of the Aravali range. The fort was built in the 15th century AD by Rana Kumbha. This fort is also significant due to being the birth place of Mewar's legendary King Maharana Partap. This fort is one of the finest examples of defensive fortification in Rajasthan.

Jaisalmer Fort: Known as Sonar Quila (Golden Fort), the mega structure merges with the golden hues of the desert ambience and the setting suns in its most colourful shades gives it a fairy tale look. Jaisalmer Fort was built by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D.

Junagarh Fort: It is one of the most imposing forts of Rajathan. The most important thing about this fort is that it has remained unconquered till date. This fort was built in 15th century by one of the most able and trusted generals of Akbar, Raja Rai Singh. There are 37 palaces, temples and pavilions inside the fort, all are constructed with red sandstones. The palaces have exquisitely carved windows, balconies, towers and kiosks.

Mehrangarh Fort: Located in Jodhpur, Mehragarh fort is one of finest among Rajasthan forts. The fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 century AD, but subsequent rulers of Jodhpur have also added to it over the centuries.
