Forget the white wedding theme. These days, many environmentally conscious couples are thinking green. And there’s no better way to start planning than with eco-friendly wedding invitations.

If your first impression eco-friendly wedding invitations involve drab, brown paper and dull graphics, then you haven’t seen the latest innovations in green design. Contemporary vegetable ink colors are vibrant and rich, and recycled paper is smooth, white and bright. From an aesthetic point of view, it’s almost impossible to tell whether paper is ecologically friendly, or made with inks and chemicals that harm the earth.

There’s far more to eco-friendly wedding invitations than the recycled paper they’re printed on. But how can you make sure that every component of your wedding invitations is environmentally friendly? Here are a few things to look for when you’re searching for green wedding invitations.

Green Seal Certification

Look for the Green Seal when you’re searching for eco-friendly products. Green Seal is a certification program for ecologically friendly products. The seal is granted to products that meet very rigorous testing standards for environmental stewardship. Products that win the green seal are guaranteed to be made in ways that reduce the carbon footprint (or at least don’t add to it) of the company that makes the paper, ink and other components of the invitation.

Recycled Paper

Eco-friendly wedding invitations are most often made using recycled paper â€" but there are different kinds of recycled paper. The most ecologically friendly paper is made with 100 percent post-consumer waste, which diverts materials from the landfills and doesn’t use any new materials in its making.

When your wedding invitations are made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled waste or paper, it means that no trees were harvested to make your wedding invitations, and all the materials that went into making them diverted from a landfill or the waste stream.

Chlorine Free

Traditional paper is often bleached with chlorine to make it bright white. Unfortunately, chlorine bleach processing is not kind to the environment. That’s why we most often think of recycled paper as being off-white or dull in color. Papers processed without chlorine can be dyed in bright, beautiful colors or be printed with stunning ink colors.

Eco-Friendly Printing Process

Digital printing uses a process that is much friendlier to the environment than the traditional printing process. There are a number of different printing processes that reduce the use of ink and electricity, or use materials that don’t pull as many resources from the environment. Again, look for printing processes that are Green Seal certified. That way, you know that it’s been investigated and evaluated for its efficiency and environmental consciousness.

Eco-Friendly Inks

The inks used in printing eco-friendly wedding invitations are usually soy or vegetable based, rather than mineral or petroleum based. Thanks to modern techniques, soy-based inks and dyes are beautifully bright and rich in color.

Forest Stewardship Certification

The Environmental Defense Fund estimates that nearly 70 percent of the paper that’s used in the United States comes from virgin paper â€" paper that is made with 100 percent new wood. Even worse, a great deal of that wood comes from diverse forests that are among the most endangered in the world. Much of that wood comes from illegal logging.

The Forest Stewardship Council was established in 1993 to help safeguard the forests. An FSC certification means that an independent third party has tracked the chain of custody for any wood used in production, from the saw to the paper mill, to ensure that it was grown in an ecologically sound way, and its logging was done in an ecologically responsible manner. Wedding invitations made with FSC certified paper have been certified as environmentally friendly.

Green-e Certification

A company that holds a Green-e Certification has made a commitment and proven that they use only renewable energy in their products. That means that their plant and production are powered by hydro-electric power, biomass, solar or hydrogen fuel. Not only are invitations made by companies with a Green-e certification friendlier to the environment, but the company is friendlier to the environment too.

If your intent is to have a green wedding, there’s no reason that you shouldn’t start from the very beginning of the planning process. By searching for paper, ink and printing processes that bear special environmentally friendly certification, you can ensure that your invitations aren’t contributing to the plight of our natural resources.

Green, eco-friendly invitations are a little bit more expensive than traditional wedding invitations, but those few extra dollars make a huge difference to the environment and to future generations. For many couples, it’s a small price to pay.
