Thermoforming is an important industrial process which results in the production of a wide variety of disposable containers and products such as packages for vegetables, fruits, cups for ice-cream, fishery cooling products, boxes for preserved fruits, pickles, candies, cakes, chocolates, snacks, fast food, all kinds of cans, food dishes, trays, bowls, lids, toys, small hardware, clothes and all kinds of commodities. Thermoforming involves heating plastic sheets to such a high temperature that they become pliable. Once the plastic sheets attain a certain level of pliability, they are set in a mold and adjusted to the required shape.

The equipment involved in thermoforming comes in different sizes depending on the scale of production and budget of the industrialist. Large scale thermoforming involves the use of large machines which work at a high speed, producing numerous parts. The manufacturing process basically involves feeding a plastic sheet into the machine from a roller, into a set of chains to which it’s affixed and then transported through the extremely hot oven. In the subsequent stage, the heated sheet moves into a form station where it’s cast into a mold with a pressure-box and a vacuum is applied with pressurized air to cause the plastic to take on the detailed shape of the mold. Once the plastic sheet has been shaped by the mold, it’s forced out of the mold by a reverse air cycle. Its ejection could also be aided by the use of a special strip pad. The next stage involves the trimming off of formed parts. The remaining sheet web is typically crushed in a granulator and recycled in the same factory.

As demonstrated by the different types of products produced by thermoforming, there are two different categories of thermoforming â€" thin gauge thermoforming in which a relatively thin sheet is used to cast the desired products such as plastic cups and thick gauge thermoforming which is used to produce larger products such as cosmetic surfaces for vehicle and refrigerator doors. Upon removal from the mold, heavy/thick gauge products often undergo further manipulation by craftsmen such as drilling and cutting to achieve the desired effect. Thin gauge products tend to be used as food containers and are usually disposed or recycled while thick gauge products tend to have a more lasting usage. Thermoforming is a business enterprise that if well planned and managed with effective strategies, can earn an entrepreneur millions of dollars depending on the scale of production and the marketing strategies that are utilized.
