Recently, if you’re active in the online real estate world you have likely stumbled across a blog, thread or website promoting a new SEO contest. The contest has quickly caught on and is already creating teams and excitement. This real estate SEO contest has attracted some of the best real estate webmasters in the world and is sure to deliver an opportunity to learn for everyone involved?

The goal of the contest is to get to the top of the first page of Google results for the keyword “The Greatest Real Estate Agent in the World”, the time frame is just over 2 and a half months and the contest ends on May 1st, 2008. Officially, the contest started on February 12th, kicked of by Morgan Carey over at Real Estate Webmasters (REW) after hearing about the idea and concept from Eric Bramlett, a Real Estate Agent in Texas.

The prize is a combination of valuable services offered by REW which basically amounts to a complete website, hosting and use of their IDX solutions services. The value of the prize is set at over $4000 and is transferable to anyone. (sorry if I’ve left anything out!)

Contests like this are seen by some as a great way to learn, network and test tactics in a fun and competitive environment. Most contestants are already reporting the success their realizing in team efforts and that they’ve learned more in a few days than they are able to learn on their own in months. The contest is off to a good start with some pretty promising competitors already on the first page.

Critics of most SEO contests claim that these events create a reason for contestants to spam; spam can give webmasters a headache as they swift through blog posts and comments in forums endlessly deleting spam left from contestants. I can’t say whether or not spam happens and if it truly does give anyone a reason to complain but if it does cause extra work in anyway, there’s cause for a just argument.

If I had to guess I’d say that these contests do more good than bad. As mentioned, they’re a great way to strengthen team skills, learn new tactics and compete in a friendly environment. Regardless of any heartache and criticism, the contest is well on its way and on May 1st, 2008, we will all know who the Greatest Real Estate Agent in the World is.
