T In its simplest form, access control in Windows Server 2003 acts like a security MCSA Certification guard and the physical controls at the airport. For each request or attempted action, the security guard or the physical control evaluates the request or action against a list of permissions that are associated with credentials. If a person wants to move to the gate area, she must have a picture ID and a boarding pass for a flight leaving that day, A guard inspects these credentials before providing access. If a person attempts to enter a secured area, he must know the door code or have the correct badge. As long as the guards are properly trained and the controls are properly implemented, security at the airport can control access—every person must have the proper credentials before they can do what they want to do. If something is not properly managed, if credentials can be falsely obtained, if con?trols are weak, or if free practice exams for MCTS security is ill-designed, then security will not work.
In Windows Server 2003, the same truths hold true. Credentials must be restricted to those who need access and access controls need to be well designed. For Windows Server 2003, the credentials are the SIDs, the controls are permissions, and the security guard is the Security Reference Monitor process.
Figure 9-6 shows a file that does not inherit permissions from its parent folder. The permissions are directly set on the file. The permission boxes are not grayed out. Figure 9-7 shows the the result of this on the Permissions tab in the Advanced Security Set?tings dialog box. You should note that the Allow Inheritable Permissions From Parent to Propagate to This Object and All Child Objects. Include These With Entries Explicitly Defined Here check box is not selected.
Permissions can be inherited from multiple tiers. If many levels of the hierarchy have MCSE study guides free download permissions and inheritance is not blocked, all permissions will apply successive lay-ers. Figure 9-8 shows this scenario.
