Author: Dave Newgates If you think that the only way in which you can win in a blackjack game is only through the card-counting method, think again. Though card counting is a very effective strategy, it is very hard to perform, especially if the blackjack game that you play is using more than one deck of cards. There is a basic decision-making strategy in blackjack that helps you make the best decisions whether to HIT, STAND, SURRENDER, DOUBLE DOWN, or SPLIT on a hand.
The Blackjack Chart
The basic strategy that I am referring to is using the Blackjack Chart, sometimes called the Cheat Sheet. Actually, this tool is not really equivalent to cheating, it is just an outline of which decision is best to make with regards to what hand you are currently holding. With enough practice and constant application of this chart, you can memorize every situation, and making the best decision in blackjack becomes automatic for you.
In actual land-based casinos, most of the time, any player is not allowed to bring this chart and use it while playing blackjack. However, if you are playing on an online casino website, nothing can stop you from using it. You can consult the blackjack charts whenever you feel like doing it, since there is no time pressure when it comes to online blackjack games, plus no one is prohibiting you to do so.
However, using the blackjack chart cannot guarantee that you will at all of your games. But the good thing is that you can minimize your losses in the long run, and you can manage your bankroll easily since you are lowering the house edge against you while you are using this chart.
Basic blackjack strategy charts can be found online. The best ones to find are the color coded ones so you can easily find which decisions are the best to make at any hand situation. The blackjack strategy chart will provide you with information on when to HIT, STAND, DOUBLE DOWN, SPLIT, or SURRENDER. You will also be informed of what move to make if a double down or surrender is not allowed in a particular blackjack variant.
You can see one good example of a blackjack strategy hit chart from NoDepositBonus.com. Once the hands have been dealt, add up your cards and find your hand down the left hand column of the chart. Note that pairs and hands with aces are special cases. If your hand is below 8 then follow the instructions for 8. If your hand is over 17 then you always want to stand.
Next, follow the chart along until you find the column that matches the dealer's face-up card and you should find the correct action to take in that box. After hitting, repeat this process until the chart tells you to stand (or you bust).
After a split some casinos do not allow you to re-split should one of your two new hands also be a pair. In this case simply follow the actions for the total of your cards.
Make sure that you obtain the right chart for the variant of blackjack that you plan to play. Follow it in a disciplined approach in order to lower the house edge over you.
