What is Insomnia?

Insomnia takes many forms, difficulty getting to sleep at night, waking too early in the morning and even waking at frequent intervals throughout the night. It’s quite likely that many of us will suffer from insomnia, to greater or lesser degree, at some time during in our lives. For most of us it will be will be just a temporary thing and the effects will be only minor, For people who suffer from chronic insomnia, however, the consequences can be far-reaching, effecting memory, concentration and co-ordination. The physical and mental effects can be detrimental to their whole life, causing irritability, lethargy and mood swings and can, in extreme cases, lead to such desperation for rest that the sleep deprived person can turn to drink or drugs in an effort to gain relief. For such people in could mean that tasks requiring absolute concentration, such as driving or operating machinery, could become dangerous, making them a liability not just to themselves but also to others around them. For sufferers of such chronic insomnia it is imperative that the root cause of the insomnia is diagnosed as quickly as possible in order to allow normality to return to their lives.

How Much Sleep is ‘Normal’?

The ‘normal’ amount of sleep will vary from individual to individual and depends on a number of factors such as age and lifestyle. Babies, for example, require as much as 16 hours sleep every day to keep pace with their rapid growth and development rate and children of school age who regularly receive under ten hours a night will rapidly start to suffer from poor concentration, resulting in an under performance in their lessons. Adults, on the other hand, need only seven to nine hours sleep each night for peek performance and, the older we get, the less sleep we need with some lighter sleepers requiring less than six hours a night.

What Causes Insomnia?

Insomnia is often caused by physical conditions that give rise to pain, discomfort or involuntary movement. Conditions such as chronic back pain, indigestion, allergies that cause itching and sneezing or restless leg syndrome are just a few examples of the possibilities.

A complete change of sleeping position can often lessen back pain and a new, firmer mattress on the bed will provide more adequate support in the lower or lumbar area of the spine and will, invariably, reduce back pain and aid sleep. These days there’s a wide choice of mattresses and divan sets with ‘tri-zone’ comfort system technology that provide improved support to those areas of the body where it is most needed, like the lower back and neck.

Sleeping in a more upright position can also help some people to achieve a better quality of sleep. There are now electrically controlled, adjustable divan beds available on the market, which offer a support system that targets seven different zones of the body to provide support and some even have an additional layer of memory foam that responds to the contours of the body to provide comfort where it is needed most. The sleeping position in these beds can be minutely adjusted by remote control until the most comfortable position is found.

External sources, either from within the bedroom or pervading from outside, can also be the cause of insomnia. Excessive noise, a streetlight outside the bedroom window, strenuous activities close to bedtime, a bed that is too soft or too hard, is too small or, due to inadequate support, causes roll together, can all contribute to insomnia.

A psychological problem caused by events like bereavement, stress at work, anxiety about a relationship or financial worries, can make sleeping difficult, which can, in turn, lead to depression that further prevents sleep. This can lead to mental health problems that are closely linked to sleeping problems and so begins a vicious cycle.

Too much alcohol or over use of everyday, over the counter medicines like decongestants or appetite suppressants can be detrimental to sleep, both the quality and the amount of sleep can be adversely affected. Even medicines specifically prescribed to aid sleeping can cause withdrawal symptoms and thus further sleeping problems when they are stopped too quickly and certain antidepressants and beta-blockers can exacerbate sleeping abnormalities.
