Novice internet marketers are often overwhelmed by the amount of information swimming around them while surfing on the internet. And, it will only get worse as bigger fish come into the vast waters of the internet sea around them. So, how does a sardine swim with sharks? Well, it's not easy but here's a thought. According to 19th century writer, Voltaire Cousteau in his Primer: "How to Swim with Sharks", he wrote "swimming with sharks is like any other skill: It cannot be learned from books alone; the novice must practice in order to develop the skill".

Internet marketing is a learned skill. It takes much effort, practice and continuous testing. However, you can learn from many of the so called expert "Gurus" by paying close attention to what they do and say. You should study auto responder messages, sales letters and ad copy. But remember, growing trends on the internet are quickly changing the tides of how information flows on the web and now you can profit greatly by learning new ways to market your business. American writer and futurist, Alvin Toffler, author of the 1970's book "Future Shock" wrote "the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." You should pay close attention to new terms like Web 2.0 and enabling technologies like blogging, social networking, RSS, and video marketing. These terms are now leveling the playing field for many marketers even with limited experience and this means big potential profit is possible if used effectively. Use all of them wisely. Consistency is very important.

But first, if you want to make more than nickels and dimes, you have to think big and self-confidence is vitally important to profit online. Don't put the cart before the horse…you are building a business. It is imperative that you think long term and you must get your mindset right. You have to decide if entreprenuership is for you or not because you must think like a successful entreprenuer. The internet has no boundries. Don't limit your thinking or the scope of your creativity. Ask yourself - are you a self-starter? Your motivation is critically important. Are you decisive? Are you equipped emotionally to run a business? If you are looking for guarantees in business, forget it - no one will do that and your understanding of business is far too narrow. However, if you are teachable you can learn how successful businesses are built and emulate what others do through research, practice, testing and implementation. Every successful business starts with proper planning and preparation. According to the US Small Business Association, "Research indicates that poor planning is responsible for most business failures".

On the internet, there is a great mismatch that occurs with people and the web. Globally speaking, the internet does not sleep but we must. We also have families, jobs and other activities that can interfere with our ability to properly manage all the physical demands of a web-based business. It is very clear that if you are trying to manage everything yourself you may already be in trouble. Essentially, look for ways to outsource the parts of your business you can't do very well. If you join up with particular programs, look for the ones that offer you tools, training resources, leadership and mentoring. Get your own domain. All successful business have their own domain. Now, you can concentrate on building your business enterprise.

Technology is there for you to use on the web. Embrace it; Don't be afraid of it! Join business social networks and collaborate with people similar to yourself. Identify each others strength and weaknesses and work together. That is one of the inherent values of a good community. Look for mentors and ask questions. Can you write? Your mind can be one of your greatest assets! Articles written by you can greatly contribute to your traffic if you write frequently and topically. Become an expert in your area and contribute back to the web. Using video in your marketing can skyrocket your business to new heights if used correctly. Make use of RSS and you won't regret it. New technologies have created a whole new market place for the web. It is becoming more transparent and you don't want to waste time. But, be organized and set realistic goals. Be nimble because change is likely in your business and never benchmark off other businesses. You don't have all their information. Focus on your business and you'll be fine to swim with sharks in the open waters of the internet.
