Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines such as Google, Msn and yahoo for the websites targeted keywords. As a marketing strategy for increasing a website's relevance, SEO (search engine optimisaton) considers how search algorithms work and what people search for more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users.

Below are some ideas on how to get your website to the first pages of Google MSN and Yahoo
On Page Optimisation
On-page optimisation is a process in making your website as search engine friendly as it can be. Generally if your website is not optimised then you have a lot less of a chance of being seen on the first pages of Google MSN and Yahoo.

Ideally you should make sure that all of the web pages on your site can be indexed/spidered by search engines ā€" also make sure that each page is linked to your home page i.e. ā€¯yourdomainnameā€¯.com/contact.html" has a link back to ā€¯yourdomainnameā€¯.com/index.html, this process is known as internal linking and should be done for every link on every page. Make sure that the links within your site are complete i.e. if you are linking to the contact page link to domain.com/contact.html as apposed to just contact.html.
Each page should have its own individual set of meta-tags, these should be arranged correctly with a good title tag, description tag and keyword tag for each individual page try to give each page its own unique set of meta tags as this will help get each page listed in the search engines thus giving you increased traffic to your site and hopefully sales. You should make your page title tags and description tags describe the content of your different web pages. The page title tags should be less then 68 characters and the description tags more detailed but less then 148 characters.

Header tags are also very important on your pages try to make sure that each header tag is one of your chosen keywords as this shows that each keyword is relevant to the content on your page. Once you have done the above start to look at your content, you need to place your keywords in your content but it has to be natural rather than stuffed, make sure that you have unique content on every single page.

If you use images on your pages you need to make sure that you use descriptive URLs for your images i.e. use my-pic.jpg as apposed to numbers and or letters .jpg. Also make sure that you label all of your images with descriptive alt attributes.

Try to make good use of anchor text links within your content - if you have a page about Gold Fish, use the phrase Gold fish in the text that links to it.
Don't waste your efforts on pages that you don't need to be in the search engines or that you don't think will bring you traffic, possibly your terms and conditions page or contact page. Use the rel="nofollow" tag in the links to these pages.

Make sure that your code is valid, in some instances bad code can lead to search engines not being able to properly read a page. Use the W3C validator to check your coding.
