Author: Priyanka Verma The study, conducted by researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, shows that the maximum number of running-related injuries suffered by American youngsters aged 6 to 18 were caused by running related accidents.
Running related injuries happening more often
The study showed that over a 14-year period, the number of running-related injuries suffered by American youngsters increased 34 percent, from 11,706 injuries in 1994 to 15,663 injuries in 2007.
In the study, the researchers examined running-related injuries among children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years and found that an estimated 225,344 such injuries were treated in the U.S. emergency departments from 1994 through 2007, for an average of more than 16,000 each year.
Study findings
After analyzing the injury cases, the study authors noted that the majority of the running-related injuries were sprains and strains to the lower extremities, including the ankle, foot and knee, while falls accounted for one-third of the injuries and more than half of the injuries occurred at school.
The researchers noted that the major cause of injury for children between 6 and 14 years old was from falls and while running at school.
Falls major cause of injuries
The falls resulted in injuries like fractures, lacerations, and soft tissue injuries, the research findings show.
And those between 15 and 18 years were more likely to sustain injuries following their involvement in some sport or other recreational activities, the researchers found.
"Encouraging children and adolescents to run for exercise is a great way to ensure that they remain physically active," EmaxHealth quoted Lara McKenzie, PhD, and principle investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital, as saying.
"However, the findings from our study show that formal, evidenced-based and age-specific guidelines are needed for pediatric runners so that parents, coaches and physical education teachers can teach children the proper way to run in order to reduce the risk of injury."
More studies required
The first of its kind study examined the injury cases from National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a nationally representative sample of about 100 hospital emergency departments in the United States.
In order to better understand pediatric running-related injuries, further research is required, the study authors conclude.
