Author: Melinda Recently, a rural Midwestern teenager was walking home in subzero weather, in the dark, and, deciding to take a shortcut, stepped on a thin spot in the middle of a frozen pond. The boy fell through the ice and couldn't get out. Luckily, the cell phone in his waterproof pocket was still working, and he was able to call 9-1-1.
Unfortunately, the connection in the wooded area was weak, and the operator couldn't tell who was calling, but was able to discern information about the incident. The operator searched an online reverse cell phone lookup to look up the caller's identity, and determined the names and location of the cell phone account owners.
The boy's parents, in the meantime, were worried about their son, and were about to report him missing. They heard from the police instead. The parents confirmed that the call had come from their son's cell phone. They told the police the approximate location of their son, and the rescue party was on the way. By the time the parents arrived at the scene of the accident, the paramedics were vigorously attending to their freezing but grateful and alive son.
Although the boy was submerged in icy water, it wasn't long enough for him to get hypothermia. Had it not been for the wonders of today's technology, it would have taken much longer to get to the boy in time to prevent serious consequences, if not death. This teenager owes his well-being to the reverse cell phone lookup.
