We all know that mold is disgusting, but it’s also a health risk to you and your family. Do you know if your home is infested with colonies of mold? Do you know how to safely eliminate it and prevent re-infestation? Must you hire a professional?

Mold is a living organism which releases spores into the environment. There are thousands of species of mold, all liking different environments. These spores travel through the air and on surfaces until they encounter the right environment, which might be a damp spot under your sink, inside a damp wall, in a crawlspace, or even inside air ducts. So what, you may say? These mold spores are then inhaled and ingested by you, your family, your pets, and your guests. Most likely you will not even know they are there. Once in the body they will cause disease if the immune system cannot fight them off. The more spores you are exposed to, the greater the risk of health problems. Allergies, breathing difficulties, asthma, pneumonia, and other risks exist. You will find mold in damp places. Without water the spores cannot grow, although they may still be present. Mold grows into colonies, groups of tiny organisms which are visible as dots, raised bumps, fuzzy irregular growths, or other forms. Mold may be white, black, red, orange, yellow, green, almost any color under the rainbow.

You can eliminate this mold yourself, and you should do so quickly and safely. If mold is found in your home during a home inspection you will have difficulty selling your home, and may be required to hire a removal service and pay for another inspection. Beware of wandering salesmen who want to inspect your home for mold on a surprise basis. They will likely tell you that dangerous mold exists in your home, and that only they can remove it. This is untrue. They are counting on your fear and your lack of knowledge on the subject in order to take your money. There is a huge industry in companies, many reputable, to remove this mold. This may be the route for you, but first you should educate yourself. You need to know how to identify the mold in your home, if it exists, and not just take the word of a self-appointed expert. Also, you can save a significant amount of money by eliminating the mold yourself.

In the meantime, check damp areas in your home, but do not attempt to clean up mold without instructions. Look for fuzzy colonies of any color, black being the most common, typically in round shapes on surfaces. Where there is one type of mold there are likely others. Do not touch or inhale spores, keep children and pets away from these areas.
