When it is the "time of the month," women experience not only the physical symptoms of the cramps but also other conditions such as bloating, fatigue, swelling, headache, irritability, mood swings, and breast tenderness, all of which are associated with a woman's menstrual period.
Period pains are very common, and a frequent cause of absence from work or school. If your employer, or even your doctor, is a man, you seem unlikely to get much sympathy... but period pains can be crippling to some people, or even just downright uncomfortable and miserable. It's no wonder we girls get grumpy at this time of the month, is it?
Conventional treatments for period pains are available, but do tend to have their side effects and disadvantages. Ordinary painkillers are usually the drug we reach for first when faced with period pains, and searching for fast and effective menstrual pain relief. Painkillers do work, but may cause damage to the liver and stomach lining.
What you can do for menstrual cramps
Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables whole grains, nuts and seeds, beans and pulses and unrefined cold presses vegetable or seed oils. These foods will provide you with a range of nutrients that will assist in calming your muscles and nervous system so that the cramping is reduced. They will also assist the body to remove toxins.
Avoid fatty meats, processed fats and fried foods. These foods add to your body's toxicity.
Avoid additives and preservatives as far as possible, as these are also major contributors to the body's toxic load.
Treat any constipation (which will aggravate cramping) by adding plenty of fibre to your diet, drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of exercise.
The herbs yarrow and fenugreek can help maintain hormonal balance during your period. Both are natural sources of progesterone, the hormone that causes the uterine lining to thicken. It is recommended steeping either herb in boiling water and then drinking the tea once a day for the duration of your period. Yarrow and fenugreek are available in most health food stores.
Supplements of the amino acid DL phenylalanine can help ease menstrual cramps. You might find the amino acid in capsule form in health food stores, or you can ask your pharmacist if he can get it for you. Follow the directions on the bottle for proper dosage.
Don't let your body get cold. Cold causes muscle contractions and spasms. Heat, on the other hand, can lessen the severity of cramping. Moist heat is best - a hot bath, a hot-water bottle, or a heating pad that circulates warm water. Whichever treatment method you choose, use it as often as necessary.
