Chittorgarh Forts holds a special place in Rajasthan tourism and finds itself associated with many interesting legends. One of the palaces at the fort is named after Rani Padmini, the queen whose beauty so entranced then ruler of Delhi, Sultan Ala-ud-din Khilji, that he attacked Chittor to get his hands on her. However, she committed 'jauhar' (burnt herself on funeral pyre) along with other ladies of the royal household to save her honor.
Kumbhalgarh became an important part of another legend that originated from Chittorgarh, in which a usurper Banbir sought to kill the infant heir of Mewar, Udai Singh. She stole away with the prince and sought refuge at a Jain governor's place in Kumbhalgarh. 17 years later, Udai Singh was coronated at Kumbhalgarh and led combined forces of Mewar and Marwar to win back his throne.
Udai Singh later founded the city of Udaipur, which is considered the most romantic city of Rajasthan. Lake Palace of Udaipur stands on a small island on Lake Pichola surrounded by lush greenery. Its delicate filigree and window screens along with several other architectural features make it one of the best venues for grand royal weddings of Rajasthan. Whether its modern elegance of the City Palace, the ingenious ways of natural air-conditioning at Hawa Mahal or the accurate masonry instruments of astronomy at Jantar Mantar, advanced architecture at Jaipur proves the patronization of arts and crafts by the erstwhile rulers of this princely state. The rare gems and distinctive meena work in gold makes Jaipur's jewellery famous all over the world.
