The first thing to install to a new nursery is a smoke alarm, for a few pounds (or free from your local fire prevention officer) these life saving gadgets should be your first consideration. When your child begins to crawl it's important that any spare electrical socket is covered with a cheap plastic socket protector to prevent your curious baby from sticking his fingers. Whenever possible, attempt to disguise electrical leads and sockets with nursery furniture your toddler doesn’t use, like dressers.

The second most vital item is your child's cot since this is where they will initially spend most of their time in those early months. Cots are also one of the major causes of baby injury and death so it is very important to make sure your cot follows the appropriate safety regulations. Your cot should be deep enough so your youngster is unable to climb out. The rails of the cot should be near enough together to stop your youngster from trapping their head. Check that if the cot has drop down sides that they have sturdy locks to stop them from being accidently operated by your baby. If you have a used cot ALWAYS purchase a brand new mattress for each child. The mattress should have a gap of not more than 4cm around the outside of the cot to stop your baby from becoming trapped.

Always place your newborn down to sleep on his back to reduce the dangers of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) and refrain from using cushions or overly fluffy bedding in the crib. If using a nightlight make sure it is located away from the cot and any other soft furnishings

When creating your child’s room layout make certain no furniture is located near windows, as your child grows they might attempt to climb up and have a peek out. Never position small nursery furniture your childlittle one may use to clamber on or things like cots or changing tables in front of windows to stop him from perhaps falling out. Keep the windows in the child’s room securely secured. When opening a window for ventilation make sure it is properly fixed and ideally never open more than 5cm.

Another item of baby furniture responsible for numerous infant injuries is the changing table. Using a u - shaped changing mat can assist enormously in ensuring your child can't roll away and some changing tables even have straps to fix your child. Changing equipment should be kept beyond the child’s reach in a drawer of on a shelf. An accidental baby powder spill can have harmful effects to an infant.

Window dressings are a major cause of injuries and death in babies. Avoid using long curtains or drapes that may ensnare and asphyxiate a young child and never hang blinds with long cords in your baby’s rrom. When using blinds make sure the cords are tied up to keep them short and are never within a child’s reach.

Select your toy storage carefully. Look for toy boxes that are open or have very lightweight or child friendly hinged lids. Boxes are alluring places for youngsters to clamber into so it's essential they won’t become shut in. You should also attempt to select baby furniture with lids and drawers that won’t pinch your baby’s tiny digits. Cupboard and wardrobe doors are also a potential hazard to your baby and you should consider fitting child safe mechanisms to stop your youngster from injuring themselves

By following sound advice and ensuring their furniture meets the appropriate standards new parents can create safe, warm and stimulating nurseries for their newborn.
