The name platinum came from the Spanish word “platina”, meaning little silver; as its color is white, almost like silver. But, its metallic luster and strength is much better than that of silver. Although, the Spanish disregarded platinum, as they found it while mining gold. Gold was given more importance those days. Full use of platinum was not done till the 19th century. Since, melting point of platinum is very high, such technology was not discovered till the 19th century and platinum didn’t come to any use of man. With the advancement of technology, scientist came to know the importance of platinum. Later, it was used for many different works. The most use of platinum has been done in making jewellery. As platinum is a very costly metal, platinum ornaments are also prohibitively expensive. Very few people can afford platinum rings. Platinum is cut and polished using various techniques, which makes it very expensive. Since platinum is very costly, it is often used to make wedding rings. There is a very close relation between platinum and engagement ring. A person always wants to gift his or her counterpart the most valuable ring available, on their wedding day. As platinum is very expensive, gifting a ring made of platinum is a common practice. As discussed earlier, due to the high price of platinum, very few people can afford platinum wedding bands. To make platinum rings affordable for all types of people, the jewellery companies have tried a lot to cut its cost.
