In this world of managing everything from your daily routine to your staff, it is important to provide a good atmosphere in which your employees will thrive. In my many years of retail customer service at a major women's clothing chain, I learned a few things that might help you manage your property management or self storage staff.

Treat your self storage staff how you would like to be treated. Are you courteous, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about your self storage product or service and is there an open line of communication? Communication is talking person to person, not voice mail and email.

Does your self storage staff know what you expect of them in the workplace? Do not think that your self storage staff can or will read you mind, instead make clear goals for them. When your self storage staff know the goals you expect of them they will be more likely to achieve them.

Would you say your self storage management style is positively charged or negatively charged? The atmosphere that surrounds your business is contagious, good, positive vibes are necessary to pass along to your staff that will in turn pass along to the customer.

Are there any incentives for your self storage staff if their goal(s) are reached? It does not have to be money, but even a pat on the back or a certificate can go along way to show your staff that you care about them. Make a chart and keep track of self storage business goals or individual achievements, this will help the staff see where they stand.

Are you hands on or hands off self storage or property manager? Being hands on means spending valuable time with your self storage management team not only to make sure the procedure is correct, it helps show the staff that you are willing to roll up your sleeves and work just as hard as you expect your self storage staff to.

There are many factors that make up a great self storage or property manager. Often times it is not just hard work and experience that make a great self storage manager, sometimes it takes a big heart to manage and understand your self storage staff.

Being able to listen and lead by example are key elements to making an outstanding self storage or property manager. Listening is a skill that many people; managers included have to hone to make an effective tool in their managing ability. Leading by example is not only a huge responsibility, but shows that the rules you are making for your self storage staff are reasonable enough for you to live by also.

If you are new to self storage management or want to brush up on some self storage management skills there are many resources out there to help you. For you to be successful as a manager your self storage staff must be successful and that in turn will make your self storage or property management business successful.
