Read on if you want to learn how to play blackjack.
Objective
The objective of the game is to build a hand valued at 21 or as close to it as possible. Anything above 21 is considered a “bust” or “too many” and will cost you your bet.
Number of Decks and Card Values
Blackjack is played with multiple decks these days. At most casinos, including the online ones, 6 to 8 decks are used. The box where these decks are kept is called a shoe. Each card in a deck carries a different value. The cards from 2 to 10 carry their face value. Jacks, Queens, and Kings are valued at 10.
Value of Aces
Aces can be valued at 1 or 11, depending on the hand total. This variable value of Ace leads to two hands known as hard hand and soft hand. A hard hand has only one possible total whereas a soft hand can have a different possible total. The following example will simplify it.
Let's say your hand contains an Ace and a 6. You can either count it as a soft hand valued at 17 (11 + 6) or as a hard hand valued at 7 (1 + 6 soft). When you draw another card, you may reach a hand total close to 21. If your hand total exceeds 21, the Ace will automatically be counted as 1, thus keeping you away from the risk of losing.
Gameplay
Once you place your bet (also called ante), you and the dealer are dealt two cards each. Some casinos deal only one card to the dealer. Depending on the value of your two cards, you can decide whether you will hit (draw another card), double (double your bet), split (split your pair to play two hands rather than one), or stand (take no more cards and pass the turn to the dealer).
What you Win
Once you stand, the dealer may draw more cards in an attempt to beat your hand. If your hand is better than the dealer, you win even money. In case of a blackjack (a combination of an Ace and a card valued at 10), you are paid 3:2, which is 1.5 times your bet, precisely. If a game ends in a tie, it is called a push and your bet is returned to you.
