With school just getting out for the summer parents are being put into the hard position of finding something for their children to do in order to keep them out of trouble, busy and happy. Plenty of fathers and mothers do a "take kids to work day" when daycare isn't an option. This is especially true on farms and construction sites. According to www.kidshealth.org, the highest risk age group on farms and construction sites is 3 to 4 and 13 to 14.

Heavy equipment like digger derricks, combines, swathers, tractors or boom trucks make construction sites and farms run smoothly and are a necessary part of the job. Kids aren't born with a healthy respect or fear of these machines, and therefore, must be taught to be careful around them.

Injuries can occur when rotating shafts pull clothing and limbs into machines, severing limbs or even killing adults and children. It is important for you and your kids to stand well out of reach of these parts. Blades can cut limbs off, and machines can throw parts, concrete chunks, etc that can strike a child. Tractors and diggers have raised attachments that can fall, roll or lower on top of a kid, crushing them.

It's a good idea to not allow your kids to wander off while you are working. They can easily get into stored equipment and take off in them or they can get in the way of operating equipment, which puts them directly into harms way. Before you start your equipment, take a moment to look around and make sure the kids aren't in the way.

Plenty of parents allow their little ones to ride in the cabs of tractors with them. While that's not advisable, it's unrealistic to expect it to never happen. Farm kids have been operating equipment and tractors from grade school on up for well over 60 years. That's just part of farm life. Some of farm kids and construction workers kid's favorite memories come from moments like these.

While government and parenting magazines and websites will tell you to never let your child do this, they aren't the ones running the farms. But you are. That means your child's safety is on your shoulders. Therefore, if you're going to let your kids drive and operate machinery, train them well, teach them under close supervision, make sure they use proper safety precautions and equipment and keep your kids strapped. Explain the dangers of their actions in detail. Stay alert and be sure you can take over for them easily if they get tired or something goes wrong.
