Save the date cards are a simple way of informing your friends and family of your upcoming wedding date. You don’t have to include any more information than that. Usually sent out months in advance of your wedding invitations, they are a great way to prepare your guests, particularly if extensive travel is involved. In doing so you will guarantee that your wedding guests are in attendance on your big day. While there are no strict rules or etiquette involved, there are a few guidelines on how to best use save the date cards. Here are a few to get you started.

Save the date cards can be versatile. They can contain as much or as little information as you’d like, and can take a number of forms. From magnets to postcards or bookmarks, save the date card options are endless.

Save the date cards can be purchased from wedding suppliers, or you could even design your own and send them via e-mail. If you have a wedding website, save the date cards are a great way to inform your guests of your URL and allow them to follow your wedding preparations. This way, you won’t need to send out any more information regarding wedding gift registries or wedding showers and bachelorette party dates.

Benefits of Save the Date Cards

Your friends and family are sure to appreciate the advanced notice that save the date cards deliver. If you are planning a destination wedding, or if your invitees need to travel far from home, they give your guests time to save for the trip, arrange for time off of work, and set up child or pet care. If you are planning a black tie event, these cards give your guests plenty of time to find formal attire. Save the date cards are a fairly new concept and as a result, very few rules apply. They can be fun, classic or whimsical. The objective is to inform your guests of the date, and let them know they’ll be receiving an invitation. If you impress them at the same time, that’s an added bonus.

All they really need to include is your name, the wedding date and, if need be, the venue. Although save the date cards do not require a formal reply, they usually generate a word of mouth RSVP, which gives you a head start on estimating your final headcount.

Save the Date Card Ideas and Trends

Save the date cards are relatively new, yet they are beginning to build up a trend. They are a good way to create a first impression of your wedding generate excitement about it. If they follow your wedding theme, they offer guests a sneak preview of what to expect. They could also contain a snippet of a love poem and set a romantic tone for the big day.

One way to gain instant attention and excitement is to choose pop-up save the date cards. Photos of you and your fiancé, bold graphics and unique shapes also make a great impression.

Remember that save the date cards don’t have to be printed on stationery and can take the form of a pen, a sticker, pot holders, calendar or anything your imagination can come up with.

Save the Date Card Wording

The content or wording should be short and to the point. Who, what, where and when is usually sufficient. Yet there is not standard, however the objective is to make your save the date cards something that catches attention. Sending a full page ‘journal’ is not necessary. By choosing your wording and design you can make them traditional, informal, fun or totally out of the box.

A traditional or formal notice would typically contain wording such as, “please save this date,” followed by the date and then the name of the bridal couple. The venue could be included below the date. As a postscript you could also include your contact number, email address or your webpage address.

A destination notice could take the form of something such as, “please join us in Mexico!” followed by date, name and venue details.

To be sure that the recipients don’t confuse these cards with the actual invitations; it’s a good idea to include a small post script. “Invitation to follow,” generally does the trick.

There are a myriad ways you can design or create save the date cards and while some may be pricey, others can be inexpensive. Whatever form they take, save the date cards are a thoughtful and unique way to announce your wedding plans well enough in advance so that everyone invited is able make arrangements to be there.
