Author: Adiba Roshan khan You must have already heard about the classical Golden Triangle circuit that includes Mughal and British architectural delights of Delhi, the Taj Mahal, and the royal entourage of Jaipur. However, here we will pay closer attention to delights that are lesser known or talked about in this Golden Triangle tour circuit but are still present some interesting options to explore.
Shahjahan chose Delhi as its capital in 1638 and laid the foundations of Shahjahanabad that was enclosed by a stone wall that had fourteen gates. You can still see the Lahori, Ajmeri, Kashmiri and Delhi gates today. Lal Qila or the Red Fort was built on the lines of Agra Fort, though it is much better in its planning and execution. Built mainly using red sandstone, marble also finds favor in many of the monuments in the fort complex. It was at the Diwan-i-Khaas or the Hall of Private Audience of the Red Fort, where the famous Peacock Throne was originally placed before Nadir Shah, the invader and plunderer, took it away.
Jama Masjid at Delhi is the largest mosque in India. Humayun’s Tomb is said to be the first example of distinctive Mughal architecture that built using the principles of Persian architecture. It is said that Humayun himself designed the tomb though there are no proofs to support the legend. Qutb-Minar in red and buff standstone was once the highest tower in India. Alau'd-Din Khalji started construction of Ala'i Minar to the north of Qutb-Minar, with an intention to make it twice the size of Qutub Minar but could only complete the first storey. The Iron Pillar of Mehrauli is another attraction in the Qutub Minar complex.
Agra, the second city of the Golden Triangle tour, is known for Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. However, you can also visit Itmad-ud-Daullah's tomb at Agra, which was built by shrewd and intelligent Empress Noor Jehan as a tribute to her father. The monument is small but so beautiful that it is often referred to as the 'Jewel Box' or 'Baby Taj'. Other delights near Agra include Sikandra, tomb of Emperor Akbar, and Fatehpur Sikri, a grand town developed by Emperor Akbar in the honor of Saint Salim Chisti that had to be abandoned later due to scarcity of water. It was the first planned city of the Mughals and still sports an all-India character. Fatehpur Sikri presents a creative fusion of Indo-Muslim architectural style hinting at Akbar’s philosophy of religious and cultural harmony.
The elephant ride up the ascent to Amber Fort at Jaipur is famous enough. However, the fort itself is beautiful with lavish interiors ornamented with paintings, decorative inlaid panels and fabulously carved ceilings. The weather at Amber Fort is usually cooler offer you a reprieve from warmer climate in the city. A part of the City Palace at Jaipur still houses royalty who have kept up their traditions and lifestyle to this day. The maze of gardens, buildings and courtyards at the palace complex are so amazing that they seem to have sprung out from fairy tales. Golden Triangle tours bring you the best of Rajputana, Mughal and British architecture and take you on a whirlwind tour of major periods of Indian history.
