Chemplast Sanmar, a major manufacturer of PVC resins, chlorochemicals and piping systems, is part of the US $ 1 billion The Sanmar Group. The Group has long been involved in ensuring a better quality of life for the community around it.

Chemplast, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, runs five rural health centres at strategic locations providing free medical consultation and medicines to the people in and around its operations at Mettur in Tamilnadu.

At the latest medical camp conducted by Chemplast Sanmar in partnership with the Chettinad Hospital, about 1,250 people from villages such as Thangamapuripattinam, Ramamurthy Nagar, Thengalvarai and Kavipuram around Mettur, were screened.

Thirteen medical specialists in disciplines such as General Medicines, Neurology, Cardiology, Diabetes, Gynecology and Pediatrics and thirty paramedical staff from the Hospital were involved in the screening camp. Various diagnostic tests such as blood sugar, ECG, ultrasound and scans were conducted free of cost. Medicines were also supplied free of cost to those who attended the camp.

The medical camp was a boon to those people, unable to afford specialised medical attention at their doorstep. Given the popular response from the community, the company is planning the next such health camp in March this year. The health camps have been a regular feature of the company's CSR activities over the past few years.

The health camp at Mettur took place at the Vaideeswara Vidya Mandir Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, an educational institution that is run by The Sanmar Group. Several hundreds of students benefit from the schools that the company runs across different locations. Besides, there are a number of after-school tuition centers to help children in their academics.

Besides the health outreach at Mettur, Chemplast also runs health centers around its Cuddalore plant, in order to supplement healthcare needs of villages around Cuddalore.

The health centers provide free medical consultation and medicines through the year, with the doctor visiting the village every week, while the periodic medical camp goes a step further and offers diagnostic tests as well. The company also provides support to the pulse polio program and preventive healthcare programs of the Government.
