Author: blanket_america Blanket America, a new charitable organization formed to help people in need get warm blankets, has joined with Gifts in Kind to distribute 1 million blanket in the next year. According to the Blanket America and Gifts in Kind websites, Gifts in Kind charitable organization distributes donated items from half of the Fortune 100 companies, small companies and individuals. They are acknowledged as one of the best managed charities in the country, whose operation budget is less than 1% of received donations. Last year alone Gifts in Kind International distributed nearly $750 million new product donations to more than 150,000 communities.
In a joint venture with Blanket America, Gifts in Kind International will match purchased product donations one for one. In other words, every purchased patchwork Heritage Quilt designed by Blanket America is an assurance of one blanket donated to the needy through Gifts in Kind.
According to www.fastcompany.com, the idea for this project began with a man named Mesh Gelman, a 34 year old Orthodox Jewish bed, bath and window treatment business owner in Manhattan. On the night of January 20, 2009, Gelman was crowded around his office desk watching Barack Obama's inaugural address with his staff when inspiration struck. Our new president had just said, "For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness."
Interpreting this as a call to action, Gelman turned to his design director. "He just said 'patchwork,' a quilt," he told her. "There's something there." Gelman fumbled for a pen and paper and scrawled "Patchwork Heritage."
That night, the Blanket America project was formed. With time, Gelman developed a new and innovative buy one, give one concept. Blanket America has set a goal to give away 1 million blankets this winter through Gifts in Kind, which will distribute the blankets to local charities and act as a third party auditor.
Most donations to Gifts in Kind are retail remnants that stores can't sell. Blanket America is different. It develops quality products specifically for Gifts in Kind distribution. Not only is the project different by pinpointing product production for one specific cause, its different by its pioneering use of technology.
The Blanket America project is changing the way charitable projects operate. They are using social media as an innovative new way to spread the work about the project. Facebook applications and widgets have been created specifically to help this new cause.
