Through a partnership with the 130-year old NGO, the Salvation Army, New York-based catering company Great Performances served 10,000 turkey dinners at cost to the hungry and the homeless of New York City on Thanksgiving Day 2009. Even Goldman Sax, the Wall Street firm which stayed in the headlines throughout 2009 for its alleged questionable financial practices, sent out 300 employees to volunteer for the event. Washington DC NGO culinary school and catering services provider DC Central Kitchen baked 8000 cookies for the Obama Presidential Inauguration in which they used First Lady Michelle Obama’s famous cookie recipe.
You do not have to be a multi-million dollar Fortune 500 mega corporation to exercise CSR within your community. As long as there is demand for delicious and hygienically prepared meals, caterers will continue to remain in active circulation and will be invited to participate in CSR initiatives when they express a desire to be counted in.
If you are a reasonably profitable caterer thinking of making a mark in your community as a socially responsible organization, you have an ample number of opportunities to get involved and most of them will never hurt your pocket book. This is because of the common sense knowledge that food costs money and cannot be distributed for free by any catering company. As long as you are willing to honestly price your meals at cost including any out of pocket expenses, there will never be a shortage of events to which you can provide your catering services and make it to the news headlines the following day. Here are a few tips on organizing a winning CSR initiative as a catering company.
Pick the Catering Event Wisely
There are two primary factors to consider when selecting a public or social event where you wish to provide your catering services. First, the nature of the event should address your expectations. Possible events include the birthday of your city or local community and the celebrations associated with it, an annual homeless food event, a charitable event being organized by your community’s most popular and famous non-profit organization for a clearly defined civic cause, etc.
Secondly, the size of the event too is an important factor. The event should be of a size that your employees and you can manage and to which your catering company can do perfect justice.
Reduce all Agreements to Writing
Sincere efforts for a genuinely good cause not withstanding, you should have written agreements with the parties involved to preserve clarity, initiative and responsibility. All said and done, it is still a business proposition in which you are getting ready to participate. Attempt to collect as much of your cost in advance as possible because often, there isn’t anyone immediately available to pay the bills once the event concludes. Your food costs should be covered up front at all times. Spell out as much of the details regarding the event in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) you will sign with the various parties involved.
Immense Benefits for Caterers
Your catering company will not only generate long-term goodwill which always translates into business, you will also be remembered by your guests for the delicious cuisine you will serve. Treat the media with care, concern and respect. If you had to pay for the coverage they will provide your catering company, you would surely be out at least a few thousand dollars. If you have never catered a charity event at cost before, consider doing so at the first available opportunity. The results far outweigh the minor inconveniences you may encounter while orchestrating the catering event.
