However sooner or later you are going to have to retire and when that day comes you cannot rely on your government alone to pay for your lifestyle; a company pension scheme is one way of ensuring that when you do retire you can enjoy it.
The important thing to realise is that company pension schemes in the UK are not simply an added perk of your job, every employer must offer such a scheme to their workers it is the law. Even part-time workers may be entitled to a company pension depending on the circumstances. However when you do take part in the company pension scheme there is a downside, you will have to pay money into it every month but there is also an upside your employer has to do so as well. In the United States the same system applies, however the employer may simply offer the company pension scheme as an added incentive to the job and you may or may not need to contribute to it although employers are increasingly moving towards the employee contribution based company pension schemes.
Your pension plans do not have to be solely based upon company pensions there are various other options open to you that will also pay out a monthly sum when you do retire. Personal pension schemes offered by various companies offer an alternative to company pension schemes by more specialist services as your employer may or may not be well managed and of course there is also the problem of the economic downturn to consider. Many businesses are collapsing in these uncertain times and if employer goes bust then your company pension will certainly be affected by it.
The most important thing to consider when you obtain a company pension is to look at what you are actually getting in return for your investment, ask lots of questions, read everything they give you and ensure you know your rights if things go badly for your employer. A company pension scheme is a convenient way of planning for your retirement but you must be careful none the less.
