Restructuring a website could prove quite challenging. It is one thing of making simple changes, where web pages at the new website will correspond to each page at the old site. However, it is quite difficult if you are making some fundamental changes for the layout, content and organization at the website. If your website is popular and has various assets then, you are probably putting it to risk while restructuring the site structure.

• The users could have bookmarked the web pages from your website. If they happen to visit your website to view those pages then, you will want to make sure that they can still view the content they require.
• The web pages from your website will show up at the search engine results. On typing the keywords, the users obviously want the right pages at your website.
• The other sites will link to your website. You obviously want people clicking on the links to get right web pages in the newly created structure. The most important point is that you want search engines to maintain mapping those links to the relevant most pages at the website. Most of this is just because the search engine counts the links to the website as the votes. You obviously do not want to lose any of those votes. Contextual relevance of links too remains an important factor. While the 301 redirect would pass raw links through, you might still wish to have the inbound links that will point relevant pages. If you lose relevance of the inbound link with redirection to the generic page then, probably the value is lost. Similarly, the search engines expend loads of efforts for determining how much the website is trusted. Most of this would relate to trust and the authority that they associate with sites and the pages, which are linked to your website. However, if you mess with their trust then you will be risking the historical traffic.
