PCOS is the acronym of polycystic ovary syndrome. It is a disease faced by the women. PCOS is the hormonal disorder that results in the infertility in women. This is generally noted in the young women who face the problem of hormonal imbalance. Nearly 12% of the women worldwide suffer with the PCOS. It is the disease that affects the ovaries and makes it difficult for the women to get pregnant. Polycystic ovaries develop when the ovaries are the stimulated to male hormones in excess. The amount of testosterone is increased in these women, which later on creates problems in menstrual cycle. PCOS was first discovered by doctors Stein and Leventhal in 1935. Later, on various research studies were conducted to know more about this problem that gave this problems its name as “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.â€

Causes of PCOS:

1. The root cause of the PCOS is insulin resistance. Many women are facing the problem of PCOS due to this. Various research studies are being carried out to reverse the symptoms, but have failed in doing so. If you are able to find it at the preliminary stage then only you can cure it up to some extent, but once the condition is severe then no medications can cure PCOS.

2. Many women with PCOS are noted to have the history of PCOS. This gives a clear idea that PCOS is hereditary disorder, which transfers from one generation to another.

3. Diabetes is known as the cause of PCOS in many women. Some scientific research studies claimed that if you are having diabetes then you are double the risk of the PCOS than normal person.

4. Obesity causes PCOS. In overweight or obese women the chances of suffering with PCOS are very high.

Symptoms of PCOS:

1. Infrequent periods or absence of periods is the most common symptom of PCOS.

2. Acne is also noted in the women who are the verge of suffering with the polycystic ovary syndrome.

3. Unable to get pregnant or miscarriage is noted as the warning sign of the PCOS.

4. Excessive hair growth is noted in the women who are facing this problem. The hair growth is noted on the face and body hair. In some cases even baldness is being noted in the women. This happens due to the excessive production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone from male hormone testosterone.

5. Being overweight or obese is the symptom of this disease of ovary because 80% of PCOS sufferers are noted to be fat or overweight.

Treatments of PCOS:

To treat the PCOS, firstly it is necessary to confirm whether a particular lady is suffering with it or not. This is done with the help of the diagnosis tests. For this the tests that check female sex hormones, male sex hormones, and sex-hormone-binding globulin are done. Also the tests that check thyroid functioning and glucose levels in body are conducted to confirm the occurrence of PCOS.

The use of oral drugs is noted to be the best treatment for the PCOS. The medications viz. Clomifene (Clomid) and Metformin (Glucophage) is done to treat the PCOS. These medications help to induce the ovulation process, which helps women to get pregnant. The oral drugs have got the success rate of 70% in treating the PCOS successfully. Gonadotrophin injections are also noted to be very effective in the treatment. One of the simplest ways to overcome PCOS is to make adequate changes to your lifestyle. Eat balanced diet, sleep properly, and do exercise to overcome PCOS. Surgery is the last option of treating PCOS. This process is called as laparoscopic ovarian drilling. This helps to induce ovulation by reduction in androgen levels.
