The newly formed Blanket America Charity is one which has been created to spread warmth to all those involved. Working in tandem with Gifts in Kind International, one of Forbes Magazine's top picks for best managed charities, Blanket America has created the patchwork blanket Heritage Quilt Collection. The goal of these two organizations is to distribute 1,000,000 warm blankets paid for by the proceeds from the sale of Patchwork Heritage Quilts.

Before the 1920's when women earned the right to vote, political statements were made through quilting. Since the Civil War, patriotic symbolism has been used to show pride and unity during our country's most difficult times.

Our nation contains an amalgam of citizens born of all countries and speaking all languages between its borders. Nowhere else on earth has such a wide variety of people settled into one united nation. Our nation is akin to a unique and beautiful patchwork quilt. Only by uniting our patchwork heritage into one strong quilt can we overcome the enormous difficulties our nation faces today. Our nation's ability to recognize the need to unite as one to help the needy is what the Patchwork Heritage Collection is celebrating.

Over 35 million people in our country are classified as needy. As long as unemployment stays at staggering highs and wages remain stagnant, the situation will not get any better. That is why one creative business owner from Manhattan, named Mesh Gelman, interpreted Obama's inaugural speech as a call to action.

As an answer to the call of duty, Gelman's company has designed the Patchwork Heritage Quilt in order to implement a new style of giving. It's called the buy one, give one model, and it just might change the way many charitable causes work. Every time a Patchwork Heritage Quilt is purchased, the proceeds, about $15 to $20, are used to buy a new, warm blanket. In turn, this blanket is donated to Gifts in Kind, who distributes the product to those in need. Through Gelman's ingenuity, a solution to a big problem has been created.

Not only is the business model ingenious, the quilt itself is a sight to behold. The top of the quilt is pieced together using 13 unique fabrics symbolizing the 13 original colonies. The underside is printed with Obama's entire inaugural speech with the statue of liberty standing proudly in the background. The quilt can be used functionally, or as a commemorative wall hanging.

Prices range from $59.99 to $99.99 and come in sizes throw to king. www.blanketamerica.com has an up to date list of retailers carrying the collection in your area. The quilt can also be ordered directly from their site.
