Author: Scott Kennedy Blakeley’s Waste Management Ltd is currently at the public consultation stage prior to submitting a planning application to the council for its centre, to be built at the company’s premises on Bickershaw Lane, Abram.
Public exhibitions detailing the firm’s plans were held at Abram Community Centre, on Vicarage Road, and at Bickershaw Labour Club, on Bickershaw Lane, between September 7 and September 11.
The meetings in Bickershaw were held in the morning and the meetings in Abram were held in the afternoon.
Feedback from the public during the consultation meetings was mainly very positive and supportive. Some minor issues were raised and the company is looking into amendments of the plans to accommodate these concerns.
Stephen Blakeley, Managing Director of Blakeley’s Waste Management Ltd, said: “The prospect of building an Environment, Energy and Ecology Centre gives us a wonderful opportunity to enhance the area.” The integrated project will have investment approaching £100 million.
The company will create a facility that will aim to achieve zero landfill for the recycling and treatment of waste, generate electricity and fuel from renewable or normally lost resources and provide a centre for education, leisure and fishing within the borough.
The project involves four integrated activities " a material recycling facility, an energy plant, a plastic to diesel plant and ecology centre.
The material recycling facility will improve the company’s ability to separate recyclates from waste by using computer controlled infra red optical separation equipment. In the energy plant, advanced thermal treatment technology, called gasification, will be used to help the company transform waste that would normally go to landfill, into low carbon energy, inline with the government's low carbon transition plan.
For its plastic to diesel plant Blakeley’s have sourced a revolutionary technology which can transform plastic to diesel, reducing the requirement to produce diesel from further fossil fuels and, more importantly, diverting plastic from landfill.
The ecology centre will incorporate leisure and fishing facilities, together with a wetlands visitor and education centre.
Stephen Blakeley added: “We are very excited by these proposals and feel it is an opportunity for the company to achieve its goal of zero landfill and to give back to the community.”
The Blakeley's Waste Management Ltd company slogan is "Help the Environment Recycle" and we are fully committed to ensuring best practices to improve the environment both for today and for future generations.
