Blackjack is one casino game where you can make a fortune in one go. Many blackjack experts have turned the blackjack tables successfully using advantage play techniques like card counting and basic strategy. Of course they did taste the defeats too, but all in all they won more than what they lost.

The card counting technique is more popular among serious blackjack players. You can find numerous books and articles devoted to the ins and outs of card counting. Basically, you assign a positive (+1) or negative (-1) value to certain cards. When you start counting cards, begin your count at 0. Add 1 to it every time a positive card is dealt, and subtract 1 from it every time a negative card is dealt. Bet big when the count is +2 or more, and bet small if the count is 0 or negative. The most common method is to assign the positive value to the cards from 2 to 6 and the negative value to the cards from 10 to Ace. You need to perform quick calculations though if you want to take advantage of blackjack card counting.

The blackjack basic strategy is relatively easy to learn and implement. As a matter of fact, it is the basis to learn other blackjack advantage play techniques. Basic strategy is actually a chart on which you can match your hand total with the dealer's up card and take the suggested action. For example, if your hand total is 14 and the dealer's up card is 9, you should hit. The strategy card contains potentially winning actions for every possible situation.

If you apply advantage play techniques in blackjack, you can gain a significant edge over the casino. However, casinos have different opinions about advantage play techniques. Some like them, some don't. But as long as you are using your brains to apply these techniques and are not noticed by the casino folks, you are good to go. There are casinos that allow you to use the basic blackjack strategy cards at blackjack tables. After all it gives them a clue that you are a novice!
