Author: glenlyod I had coffee with Jonathan today. We bumped into each other in street, crushed each other’s hands and voted unanimously for iced coffee in an air-conditioned coffee-house out of the baking heat. The last time I saw Jonathan he was about to move into a fancy apartment that he had purchased in the downtown area. He must have seen me raise my eyebrows then, and he told me that he had been a highly successful surgeon in some city the US, had made a pile of money and he and his wife had decided to come and live in Paris. She’s crazy about art and I guess he’s crazy about her. .
A few weeks later he called me and asked if I would inspect another apartment he had bought in a run-down area which was in the stages of gentrification.
Over coffee I listened to his latest tale. “My savings and my income took a terrible knock these past 2 years,” he said. “I’m not broke by any means but I’m worth a lot less than I was the last time we met. I have to take a few actions to rebalance things so that I can continue to enjoy the life of a retired gentleman, accompany my wife on her painting expeditions and visit museums and galleries with her and fly back to the US once a year to see my mother.”
“I got rid of the tenants in the small apartment, we are doing some minor alterations and are going to move in there ourselves. It’s just the two of us and we don’t need the space we have in the large apartment. I have let that to the American Embassy. They are pleased with the deal and I am delighted with the deal. The result is that I will benefit to the tune of $2,000 per month, net, meaning cash in my pocket.”
“Good for you, Jonathan,” I said. “You are lucky that you have the two apartments and that you are flexible enough to make the changes so you can maintain your lifestyle.”
“I know how lucky I am,” he said. “In the US many people have been wiped out, lost everything. Few people saw this melt-down coming. It really was a meltdown. My fortune, that I worked so hard to collect, literally melted in front of my eyes; I sat and watched it. On the other hand I learned a lot from it.
“I was clever enough to avoid getting involved with Madoff. I was clever enough to spread my investments across the market. I bought the top gilt-edged stocks to protect myself, but they were still stocks and every stock took a beating. I wasn’t clever enough to put half the investments outside the market. I’m a lot wiser now but my interest and dividends have dropped dramatically. That, in short, is why we’re changing apartments and looking for other ways to produce income. We just love living in Paris!”
