BBC Mundo (world) is an online version of the British Broadcasting Corporation international news service for the Spanish speaking world. The BBC Mundo started broadcasting its radio news first in 1938, to continue during the II World War as a counter-measure of the British government to the Nazi propaganda, offering objective news to the Latin American people about Nazi atrocities and about the way war was progressing.

After the war ended, this popular radio station continued functioning as British government's propaganda tool, but this time offering correct, credible and objective news to the Latin American countries, which were in many cases under dictatorships, and the news were highly colored to reflect their version of the truth. For many Latin American people, the BBC Mundo was the only source of creditable information about the events in their own countries. For many, BBC Mundo also offered a way of expressing their own opinions, in reaction to the repression in their countries.

Slowly but surely, the BBC Mundo changed from the British government propaganda tool to an independent news agency, which offered comprehensive, objective and well-reported news about the world events, in Latin American countries and elsewhere. BBC Mundo reflects BBC's well-respected and much listened news reporting on any topic and for any country in the world.

Since the establishment of the BBC Mundo website in 2005, this news source became also a source of information for those who wanted to learn Spanish. The website's slogan is "una voz independiente" (an independent voice"). The language used on the website, just like on the radio, is simple and straightforward, with correct grammar and syntax, perfectly suitable for practicing advanced Spanish. It also offers opportunity for the less educated Latinos to improve their Spanish grammar and vocabulary.

One of the Spanish language websites, News In Slow Spanish (www.newsinslowspanish.com), frequently uses news items to offer its students lessons in Spanish language that are contemporary, interesting and culturally-appropriate. The lessons in News in Slow Spanish change weekly, so the website is never static and boring, keeping the interest of its students and slowly increasing their level of comprehension.

BBC Mundo, just like the , offers a number of audio and video files to assist the students in the pronunciation. This is particularly important to American students, who find phonetic pronunciation difficult at first.

The BBC Mundo covers all the topics, events and regions of the world, creating the impression that we all live in one world. There is a separate web page for the news in Latin American countries. There is also a link to the BBC Mundo radio podcast, for the radio version of the news.

It is pity that the BBC Mundo does not have an English version of its web pages, which would provide an excellent learning tool both for Latinos who wish to learn English, and for other students who would like to learn English. For that, they have to go to the News In Slow Spanish

News in Slow Spanish has helped many students gain self-confidence and achieve quick and lasting results. Visit the show's website www.NewsInSlowSpanish.com and see for yourself why creators of the program have chosen this motto: You know Spanish more than you think!
