Playing out of their three stadiums, the Sundevils have won many different championships and have dominated most of the other schools in their division since 1931. Over the years the university has dominated in several sports. As a matter of fact they own 20 NCAA championships. ASU possesses 15 national championships in men's archery 15 times, 21 in women's archery, 20 for mixed archery, 13 in men's badminton, 17 for women's badminton, and 10 for mixed badminton( none of which are NCAA recognized sports). The university also has 5 NCAA championships in baseball, 3 in women's tennis, 1 for men's gymnastics, 1 more for men's track and field, 2 in women's outdoor track and field, 1 in women's indoor track and field, 1 for wrestling, 2 in men's golf, 13 in women's golf, 1 for women's softball, and 7 for women's swimming and diving for a total of 132 national championships. The men's basketball team has participated in 12 NCAA tournaments. ASU's football team won were Rose Bowl champions in 1987.They won the Fiesta Bowl five times prior to 1983. While the Sundevils have been successful in many sports, their football team remains the most popular program. The football program has played in a couple of different conferences, but the results have been the same: domination of their opponents. The most notable would be the 62-9 run of head coach Fred Kush from 1970 to 1975, culminating in a Fiesta Bowl victory over rival Nebraska. The team went through a series of disappointing seasons until the 10-3 season of 2007. Sadly, there has been a dearth of high level bowl game victories recently. With a top level recruiting class, 2010 could be a surprising transition year.
The Sundevils may not be considered in the top ten of national powerhouse programs right now, but for many years they were a force to be reckoned with. You can easily honor those past teams with your own Arizona State cornhole set and the matching Arizona State cornhole bean bags.
