CeMAP home study courses, like most distance learning options, have become more and more popular over the years, but particularly so during economic downturns such as that experienced in the few years following the credit crunch crisis. When demand increases for any product, more competition appears in the marketplace. There are of course several important factors when choosing any course provider, but often the first question that someone asks is 'What is the success rate of the course?'

Pass rates, like most statistics, can be manipulated and there are many other questions to ask that could give plenty of insight into a course, but here are some points that should be considered when comparing the pass rate of any distance learning course with a full time, on-site course:

Pass rates for full time courses will inevitably be higher than a course studied at home - and CeMAP home study courses are no different. So why exactly is this?

Those choosing to take a full time course have demonstrated a higher commitment level from the start. In some cases, their employer has paid for the course because it is needed for their job. In other cases, they have used their hard earned savings and also taken time away from their regular job. With the costs of a full time courses being inevitably higher, it requires serious consideration before someone signs up. A course provider can easily measure the results of such a course because students will usually take the exam within a few weeks of completion and the provider will contact them to confirm their results. Those they cannot contact are usually excluded from the pass rate statistics.

A CeMAP home study course is much different. As they are so much cheaper than tutored group courses, it is far easier for people to choose them with less thought. The pass rates are often lower because of the student, not necessarily the course.

Any form of distance learning requires a significant level of self discipline and determination. With no set timetable, dates and times, a student must fit their study around everything else they have in their life, such as a full time job, a family and social commitments. Study must be fitted in, meaning studying late at night when the children are in bed, weekends or even on the commute to work.

All this means it is not unusual for a student to abandon their study. It is also much more difficult and time consuming for a course provider to find out whether a student took their exam and their result when they have some students completing in a few months and others take twelve months or longer.

Many educational bodies and course providers themselves maintain that when a student is committed and puts in the effort and the time required, then distance learning is no different to the alternative options.
