There is a lot of hype out there on affiliate programs. It is said that they are an easy way to make money on the Internet, but is it really true? Yes and no. It is much easier for a beginner to use affiliate programs because everything can be set up with no hassles. The merchant develops the product, takes care of the sale, processes the payment, deals with the customer, delivers the product, and takes care of refunds (if necessary). Everything is taken care of for you.
Everything, that is, except generating traffic. And that is the hard part. Your only job as an affiliate is to send targeted traffic to the merchant’s website. This is the reason that only 10% of affiliates make money. It is either expensive (using pay-per click) or time consuming to generate targeted traffic. Plus, it takes patience. On average, only about one in every hundred visitors will make a purchase. Most beginners believe that the conversion numbers are (or should be) much higher. After they’ve sent thirty visitors to the merchant’s site they expect to have some sales. When this doesn’t happen, many of them move on and look for other products. This puts them further in the hole because they have to start all over again.
Just because the general consensus of opinion says that affiliate programs are the easiest way to start an Internet business, doesn’t mean that it is easy. It just means that it is easier than developing your own product, taking care of the sale, processing the payment, dealing with the customer, and delivering the product. On top of all that, you still have to generate traffic.
So don’t fall for the hype. Developing a successful online business requires work. And if you don’t have the time or ambition to do what is necessary, you won’t be successful. You will just wind up as another participant in the 90% of business owners that fail in their first year.
