An affiliate program is an ideal vehicle when you are just starting your online business. You can set up a profitable affiliate business without any money at all. Almost all affiliate programs allow you to join for free. You do not have to carry any expensive inventory. And you don’t even need a website (although having one makes it easier to generate sales).

They also provide a number of other advantages. You don’t have to worry about developing a product. You don’t have the hassles of dealing with the public. The merchant deals with all customer issues such as, inquiries, fulfillment (mailing out product), and refunds. You don’t have to install or maintain any kind of shopping cart. Again, the merchant takes care of that too. In fact, the merchant takes care of all the details.

Your only job is to send people to the merchant’s sales page. Each time one of your referrals makes a purchase, you earn a commission. Commissions vary from 30 percent to 75 percent of the product’s purchase price. The merchant determines the amount of the commission.

Affiliate marketing can be one of best ways to start an Internet business. But don’t confuse the word “best” with the word “easiest.” In o9rder to make money as an affiliate, you must generate traffic to the merchant’s sales page. Developing traffic (if you are doing it without spending money) can be a labor-intensive job. Writing articles is the cheapest way to generate traffic. If you enjoy writing, you are ahead of the game. If you hate writing, you are in for a tough time. Writing 1 to 3 articles per day will make you fairly successful at affiliate marketing.

Of course, there are other ways to generate traffic. You can use forums, email (but don’t spam), free ads, paid ads, and a whole host of other things. You are only limited by your imagination.
