The new 2006 Lexus IS 250 has laid the groundwork for an exciting makeover in the future. In its current state, the attempt to satisfactorily blend sport and sensibility met on the top of the hill. The shoving match that follows is exactly what makes the Lexus IS250 unique. Depending on your current flavor, you can take it out for a sense of performance driving, or you can sit back and relax on the long drive to Grandma’s.

For a basic car, the $30,000 sticker price reflects the package you’re getting, mid range quality in a fancy wrapper. Built a little longer and a tad wider than most IS models carrying the Lexus name, the simple and basic packaging actually works well for the demographic for which it was designed. The low, mildly aggressive, sporty stance calls out to family oriented individuals who aren’t ready to give up the joy of driving.

Cleverly, the entire car was designed entirely void of the ever popular keyhole. Remote sensing as you approach the car magically unlocks it and the car can be started with a simple starter button. They did design an emergency keyhole that they successfully hid in the driving column. The lack of keyholes littering the body inevitably adds to the sleek look.

The definition of the wheel arches adds significant stature to the overall design, as if flagging the area as “definite.” The overall body shape, while still clinging to some of its own unique features, looks remarkably similar to the Lexus GS. A few additional modifications would have given her more of realistically independent styling.

Complete with the choice of a manual transmission or automatic sequential shift transmission, the Lexus IS250 is making strides to follow the leaders of performance car design. The manual transmission comes with rear wheel drive while the automatic gives you the option of rear wheel drive or all wheel drive.

They interior was intentionally left to simplistic features that resembled the notion that les is more. With a classy touch, the interior gives the impression of “hidden” excitement. Simplistic doesn’t necessarily imply Spartan or basic, it means “uncluttered.” The features that are more noticeable are features designed with ingenuity and intelligence. In the tone of safety and comfort, Lexus went all out. The ventilation system automatically returns to re-circulated air when it detects higher levels of smog. The navigation system is voice controlled, which is a nice feature when you are lost on a dark, rainy night and it’s asking enough of you just to keep your car on the road.

Anyone who has ever been in an accident knows the complications that can occur when the knees smash up into the dashboard. Leave it to Lexus to install knee airbags to remedy the situation.

The reasonable 204 horse power is ample for the driving the Lexus IS250 is designed for. Her big sister, the IS 350 comes with 306. For regular highway and city driving, most people will find the 204 horse power quite sufficient, though certainly not intoxicating.

The power behind the wheel is described as easy and smooth, relevant to driving in highly congested areas. Jerky acceleration is a hindrance in populated areas. The Lexus IS250 addressed this issue. Its predictability once again speaks to the family oriented individual looking for driving excitement. Lexus got into abbreviated technology with the interior design. With the addition of AFS, EPS, VDIM, and VSC the car is one of the most electronically safety equipped cars on the road. Each and every abbreviated electronic gadget is designed to add to the safe handling and performance of the Lexus IS250.

While the electronic assisting adds to the safety and handling of the vehicle, many who test drove it complained that the car made driving less of a “hands on” experience and more like large ship piloting, where inputting data creates effect rather than actual physical action. For those of us who like the thrum of the engine to echo in our chests and the feel of the gearshift transitioning us faster down the road way, electronic overload takes away from the basic fun of driving.

Lexus significantly improved the mileage and emission with the new direct injection fuel system. Fuel is pumped directly into the injectors, which improves the overall air to fuel mix ratio and delivers better gas mileage. It’s a handsomely important feature, but if course it’s not a key selling point. With a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of 5.6 seconds, you won’t be setting the road ablaze with the Lexus IS250, but compared to many vehicles in the same or similar classes, it certainly holds its own. The top recorded speed topped out at only 142 miles per hour, but considering that this car is built for roadways and not race tracks, 142 miles per hour will get you a speeding ticket just as fast as 160. The well composed and tight suspension provides for an above average ride and good solid handling. The larger 350 has numerous complaints that the suspension needs more than a little fine tuning.

Ironically, the majority of Lexus owners are from the baby boomer generation, though the median owner of the new IS250 ranges between 27 and 30, with 29 being the average age. For the younger crowd, what this car lacks in driving excitement it makes up for in technology and a reasonable base price for a relatively significant car.

Lexus’ attempt to compete with BMW for younger demographics seems to be moderately paying off, but current company included, Lexus would still need to provide model options that allow for more of the driving experience for the younger generation that is les impressed with technology.

Overall the Lexus IS250 represents good value and classy styling, a relatively good buy for the dollar. The AWD version is a bigger hit in the northern climates, whereas the rear wheel drive sedans stop selling cold in mid winter. Both the IS 250 and the IS 350 leave car enthusiasts of all kinds wondering exactly what Lexus will turn out next.
